Where possible the program is delivered in the workshop through real projects provided by local companies. Students are expected to participate in a relevant work placement in the metals and engineering industry.

This program has outstanding employment and pathway outcomes for students. Students may progress to:

• higher level or related qualifications, and/or
• apprenticeships or traineeships in areas such as boilermaking, mechanical fitting, welding, cabinet making, vehicle body building.

Many students are offered a traineeship or apprenticeship during Year 11 and 12. Students who remain in the program to the end of Year 12 gain jobs, apprenticeships or continue to further training in the industry.

In Year 11 and 12 students will enrol in:

• MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways^ over two years,
• Materials Design and Technology – Metals (General),
• an English course,
• Workplace Learning (ADWPL), and
• two other courses or a certificate of their choosing.

^ During 2026, students are enrolled with South Metropolitan TAFE RTO code: 52787 through a Third-Party Agreement between the RTO and Sevenoaks Senior College.

Students are supported by staff with expertise in the industry field as well as being dedicated teachers who demonstrate the relevance of school-based courses to the workplace. The Metals Trade Training Pathway caters for students who are passionate about working in Metals Engineering trades. This program caters to students who are serious about successfully completing certificates, workplace learning, and courses that will prepare them for industry apprenticeships.

Our TEC consortium supports our students’ pathways with industry directions, employment opportunities and training required in the industry.  We proudly sit at the table with Cummins South Pacific, Komatsu Ltd, GKR Transport, Westrans, Qantas, Onsite Hire and Star Metals to name a few.
