SSC x CCC Year 9 STEM Girls Workshop

This week, we were lucky enough to welcome some incredibly talented Year 9 girls from Cannington Community College to the school to participate in a full day of STEM related activities and challenges. Their main challenge of the day was focussed around the ‘PowerUp 4.0’, which is a smartphone-controlled flight module that transforms simple paper airplanes into powered, remote-controlled aircraft. By attaching the lightweight motor unit to a paper plane and controlling it through a mobile app, students designed, tested, and flew their own aircraft. 🛩👩‍✈️

PowerUp 4.0 enhanced awareness of STEM by allowing students to experience science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a hands-on and engaging way. Students learnt scientific concepts such as lift, thrust, drag, and gravity; explored technology through Bluetooth control, sensors, and mobile applications; applied engineering skills by designing, testing, and improving their airplanes; and used mathematics to measure distance, speed, time, and flight performance.

This learning approach is important because it connected classroom theory to real-world applications, encouraged problem-solving and creativity, and helped students understand how STEM skills are used in everyday technology, inspiring curiosity and confidence in future STEM learning and careers.

Huge thank you to Mr Murugan for facilitating this wonderful day for our future students!
